What is Bike Chico?
A celebration of bicycling with activities to gear the community to ride to school, work, shop and play during National Bike Month in May. The Butte Bicycle Coalition coordinates this campaign to welcome new and returning cyclists and offers a platform to strengthen their skills and solidify their commitment to cycling. Walk & Roll Wednesdays & Energizer Station
For commuter cyclists, the Energizer Station will be located at the 2nd and Flume Streets Parking lot, right across from the CN&R office. Bicycle powered kitchen, Here Today Coffee, Chico Chai tea and Chico Natural Food Coop bike carts will be on hand to refresh your morning ride. Leaders in the local competition of the National Bike Challenge will be posted at the BBC table. Yoga demonstrations featuring postures beneficial to cycling will be offered.
Visit the Engerizer Station between 6:30 and 9 am every Wednesday in May to grab a quick bite and socialize with other cyclists.
Every Wednesday in May, participating schools will have a Welcome Table, offering students a chance to win a new bicycle when s/he rides, walks or carpools to school.
Participating Schools in Walk and Roll Wednesdays:
Chapman, Chico Country Day, Chico Jr., Citrus, Emma Wilson, Inspire High School, Little Chico Creek, Marigold, Marsh, Notre Dame, Parkview, Rosedale, Sierra View.
At Parkview Elementary, the 6th Grade class helped create their own tracking system made to log their miles for the Month of May! It is called Bike to Infinity and once students sign up, they are given a backpack tag with a bar code to automatically sync their miles. Data also is created to show gas and money saved, emissions prevented and calories burned! Other schools are encouraged to sign up at the www.nationalbikechallenge.org to create their teams--parents, staff, and students can keep track of their miles and carbon emissions saved too!
